Worker’s Comp Symposium Held for Local Risk Managers, Employers and Business Human Resources Staff

(July 15, 2011) — Orthopedic Specialists of Southwest Florida hosted “Wild about Work Comp” on Friday, July 15 at the Holiday Inn Downtown for local business human resources staff, nurse case managers, risk managers and others in worker’s compensation care . Speakers Dr. Paul D. Fuchs, Dr. Allen C. Tafel, Dr. Antoinio J. Flores, Dr. Fletcher A. Reynolds and Dr. Jeremy Schwartz presented programs on surgical and non-surgical treatments to help get employees with injuries better and back to work quicker. A networking session followed the program with the doctors. More than 70 people attended from Lee and Hendry counties.

Jason Nemitz, M.D. and Christopher Dawson, M.D. Join Orthopedic Specialists

“The addition of these two physicians enhances the already diverse team of orthopedic physicians within the practice,” said Dr. Charles Springer, a founding partner in Orthopedic Specialists of Southwest Florida. “Each of the physicians on our team brings a different talent or area of expertise to our practice. Working together we offer a total solution to the spectrum of orthopedic problems encountered here in Southwest Florida.”Dr. Nemitz graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a double major in Pre-professional Zoology and Genetics and a minor in Chemistry. He received his medical education at the Ohio State University College of Medicine, and completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Dr. Nemitz is Fellowship trained in foot and ankle surgery, completing this training at the Michigan International Foot and Ankle Center. He is a member of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.

Dr. Dawson completed his undergraduate education at the College of William & Mary, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology in 1994. He then earned his doctorate in medicine (M.D.) from West Virginia University School of Medicine in 2005. His surgical internship was completed at the University of Virginia in 2006. In 2010, he completed his residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Dawson is Fellowship trained in Interventional Pain Medicine, having completed his training at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2011. Dr. Dawson specializes in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation as well as Interventional Pain Medicine.

Surgeon Honored by Lee Memorial Trauma Center

Trauma Surgeon Dr. Patrick B. Leach, of Orthopedic Specialists of Southwest Florida, was honored last week at the Inaugural Second Chance Luncheon and Kevin E. Glancy Awards of Excellence presented by the Trauma Center at Lee Memorial Health System.

Recognized for his skill and his caring demeanor, Lee Memorial board members, the Regional Advisory Committee on Trauma Services, colleagues and former patients honored Dr. Leach for being dedicated to his profession, and for going the extra mile taking the time to educate patients offering all surgical and non-surgical options.

Victims of a golf cart hit and run accident while on vacation, Diane and Dave Schaeffer, of Buffalo, NY, were thrown 30 feet and both ended up with a 30 day hospital stay. “Dr. Leach pulled up a chair and spent hours discussing our cases with us,” said Mr. Schaeffer via videotape at the luncheon. “Our doctors at home are amazed and complimented Dr. Leach on his skill, we feel blessed as if he was our guardian angel.”

Dr. Glancy, the namesake of the awards program, was honored posthumously for his dedication to his career in trauma surgery, most of which was at Lee Memorial.

Orthopedic Specialists to Sponsor Edison Festival 5k

More than 1,200 runners will hit the streets of downtown Fort Myers on February 19th in the 33rd running of the Edison Festival of Lights 5K, sponsored by Orthopedic Specialists of Southwest Florida. And, among those runners, most will have suffered sore muscles, if not more serious injuries at some point in their running careers.

The Edison Festival of Lights 5K immediately precedes the Edison Festival of Lights Grand Parade, the nation’s largest and oldest night-time parade. When the runners complete their 3.2 mile circuit of downtown Fort Myers, the floats, marching bands and others will take to the streets, filling the night air with music thrilling the crowds lining the streets.

“The Edison Festival has been honoring Fort Myers’ most famous resident, Thomas Edison for more than 70 years. We’re proud to be a part of this time-honored event, participating in a way that makes sense for us,” said Fletcher Reynolds, M.D., a partner in Orthopedic Specialists of Southwest Florida. “Our great weather makes Southwest Florida a runner’s paradise,” Dr. Reynolds continued. “And this means that many runners will at some point suffer a running-related injury. Preventing injuries is relatively simple. Proper stretching and warm-up prior to running is the best prevention. Wearing the correct shoes for your body and for the way in which you run is another key factor in injury prevention.”

“The likelihood of a running injury increases over time,” Dr. Reynolds added. “Since running is a repetitive activity, and one that involves continued pounding, the stress on bones and muscles can lead to injury. Since most runners love to run, any time away from this activity is stressful. If injury does occur, rehabilitation, under the care of doctors and therapists specializing in sports medicine will ensure a quick return to a running regimen.”

Orthopedic Specialists of SW Florida, one of Fort Myers’ first multi-specialty orthopedic practices is celebrating its 10th year serving the community.

Founders Dr. Ronald Gardner, Dr. Jeffrey Richards and Dr. Charles Springer set out to establish our area’s only fellowship trained group practice specializing in a variety of surgical and nonsurgical orthopedic services designed to provide patient care from diagnosis to recovery and beyond. Today, the practice serves several Lee County hospitals and employs 109.

Since opening in 2000, Orthopedic Specialists of SW Florida has grown into a full service orthopedic medical practice with 8 fellowship-trained surgeons, five centers of excellence, a sports medicine center, physical medicine and rehabilitation program, pain management center, physical and occupational therapy department and imaging center. Injectable Collagenase Clostridium Histolyticum for Dupuytren’s Contracture

Dupuytren’s disease limits hand function, diminishes the quality of life and may ultimately disable the hand. Surgery followed by hand therapy is standard treatment, but it is associated with serious potential complications. Injection of collagenase clostridium histolyticum may reduce the joint contractures caused by Dupuytren’s disease. One day after injection, the joints are manipulated. Studies have shown significant improvement in reduction of contractures including improvement in range of motion in all joints.
